Indigenous rights is a particularly important issue in Latin America. While in the United States only 1.7% of the population is indigenous, and in Canada only 4.3% and in Australia only 3%, in Latin America 12.7% of people are indigenous. Such a large community must have their rights properly protected.
Beretta Godoy invited Latin American experts from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and from Canada to share their experiences and offer an insight into the present situation in each jurisdiction.
Federico Godoy, Managing Partner of Beretta Godoy, moderated the presentations by Juan Sonoda (Beretta Godoy, Argentina), Pedro Garcia (Veirano Advogados, Brazil), Kevin O’Callahan (Fasken Martineau, Canada), Gonzalo Grez and Juan Pablo Escudero Toro (Cariola Diez Pérez-Cotapos, Chile), Guillermo Tejeiro (Brigard & Urrutia, Colombia) and Ursula Zavala (Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano, Peru), who analyzed key points of this issue, such as Legal recognition of indigenous rights, Native title, Consultation requirements, Impact on environmental approvals and Native legal systems.
